Recently, a friend of mine suggested that If I ever wanted to grab a bite to eat after a night out in the core, that I should definitely try Wah Too. I’m a huge fan of “eating out after partying”, especially in Chinatown. So I took up the offer.
At first I lost direction as to where Wah Too was located, because the restaurant seems to have multiple identities when it comes to listings. Located on Dundas, just east of University Ave, I walk in through the glass doors hungry as a beast. The food has to be hot, spicy, and filling.
The décor is simple but clean. It reminds me of many Chinese-Hakka restaurants in East Toronto where the fusion of Chinese and Indian foods throw you off your feet with exceptional taste and quantity. This isn’t haute Cantonese cuisine. The round tables remind of the Asian propensity for gatherings. The place is very small and the service is efficient to the point where it’s robotic. The kitchen is also incredibly loud through the turn doors, or maybe I’m just a little high strung at 2 in the morning.
We order the spicy garlic shrimp, the Chicken and crab corn soup. The deep fried Lobster, and a crab dish that escapes my memory. Lineups were starting to snake out the door as the servers dressed our tables with tea and utensils. My ethnicity adds to the presumption that I require a fork and knife.
If you’re trying the fried garlic shrimp, I recommend that fried beans and cold green tea are the best accompaniments. Try the house hot sauce with the shrimp. The mix leaves its mark.
There’s practically no ambience at Wah Too outside of the food. The air is thick with flavour, and the kitchen is full of surprises. Try the specials on the black board. The lobster was incredible. A daring late night dinner for 2, approx $40.
