Winterlicious '09 - Rosewater Supper Club

Due to immense popularity and the state of the economy, the prix fixe festival has been extended by another two weeks (Feb 28th). If you’re following twitter or other online communities, you’ll notice that there is a divide between those who are enjoying the festival, and those who criticize it even before giving it a shot. Our next stop is Rosewater for lunch.

The quintessential classic supper club. 2 floors, private rooms, a waterfall bar, giant piano — the restaurant lends itself to many receptions and film festival parties. Natural light floods the large dining room during the day, dimness at night evokes romance.

No singular focus on the menu, as the chef borrows from classic international dishes and techniques. Started off with a slightly watery shrimp bisque dressed with shavings of green apple. Lacking in texture, but there tastes were there and the apple complimented the spice nicely. I got the impression that the charcuterie plate was put together with elements from the local Metro across the street. Generic Jamon, Genoa Salami. The flavours were clean and the portion was wealthy, but it didn’t really impress.

The serving of steak was a decent size, nicely cooked and served in a thick red wine jus and sprinkled with some blue cheese. A great tender steak that I’d easily order again if a larger portion was available.

The spaghettini was a mess of olives, cherry tomatoes, bits of chorizo in a tomato sauce. It wasn’t as spicy as I thought it would be, but overall a great tasting dish.

The desserts were wonderful. A wealthy serving of creme brulee infused with chunks of lindt mlik chocolate. Apple galette with praline ice cream won me over with its crusted slices of fruit and warm puff pastry.

Service was top notch — very friendly and went above and beyond to ensure that we had a great $20 lunch. Wines are available by the glass to compliment the menu, ranging from $8-10.
