For a holiday with such deep religious ties St. Patrick's Day certainly has become a great secular party (Saint Patrick essentially devoted the latter part of his life to spreading Christianity in Ireland, much like a missionary).

St. Patrick's Day is in close competition with Halloween and New Year's Eve to be the most beer-soaked and debauched of holidays. For the other two we're just as likely to be at a friend's place for a civilised party but if your'e doing St. Paddy's, you're almost definitely at a bar.
