Ask for winery suggestions in Beamsville and chances are very high that most people will tell you to check out Fielding. Sitting up on the Beamsville bench, it’s a gorgeous nouveau wine boutique/lodge. The space is built for entertaining – floor to ceiling windows giving gorgeous views of the vineyard and Lake Ontario – and a deck to relax and take it all in. Seems the idea employed here is to grab a glass — get some wine — and just go explore.
Wood, Glass and Beamsville greenery set the tone as the enthusiastic staff take you through a stellar collection of over 20 wines. Gewurztraminer, late harvest pinot gris, bold reds. Multi-textured award winning wines produced in small batches (10,000 cases). Twenty year old vines produce a fruity and floral Rock Pile Pinot Gris. The blended Meritage (Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc) has won awards and is highly praised for its mellow finish and ripe cherry and plum notes. The peachy 2007 Viognier recently picked up gold at the 009 Ontario Wine Awards. It was one of our favourites during tasting.
Staff are friendly and have a reputation for being personable and down to earth. We completely agree with our readers, no trip to Beamsville is complete without some quality time at Fielding.
Wines > Fielding has this wine called the red conception. A blend of many varietals (Lots of Pinot Noir to drips of Chardonnay), the small production wine is a spicy kick rich with meaty oak, blackberry and pepper. The title of the wine was inspired the amorous rituals at the parking lot of one of the vineyards. A wine perfect for aging, and perfect for red meats. On to the whites, Fielding won Gold at the 2008 Canadian Wine Awards for their Riesling.
Tastings/Tours > Tastings are $5 per person – and it is waived when you purchase wine. Private tours are available for six or more, and includes a cheese pairing with three of Fielding’s reserve wines. Tours are $20pp and require advance booking.
Cost > Bottles range from $14-$35 (Meritage). Icewines are $29.
Food > Winery is 2km away from downtown Beamville, which has a good amount of restaurants. Everyone recommends the acclaimed August Restaurant.
