On an ice-cold afternoon when you’re looking for refuge from the wind and blowing snow, the New Yorker Deli is a source of warm relief. And on more temperate days, it’s still an escape from the mundane, offering you a breed of sandwiches that are, literally, a cut above the rest. In typical Deli style, the portions are a sizeable undertaking, but what you don’t finish tastes just as good when you take it home afterwards.
Aside from the usual selection of cold meat sandwiches and wraps, NYD also makes a terrific steak sandwich, and some really hefty, tasty omelettes (they use cream in their omelettes!!!). For a Deli, they’ve got a very extensive menu, and chances are, something for everyone. In fact, they even offer an all-day breakfast, with your choice of sausages, eggs, toast, and home fries. The appetizers include latkes, hummus & pita, cabbage rolls, poutine, and chopped liver. The menu also includes salads, matzo ball and borscht soups, and the usual side dishes, i.e. onion rings, coleslaw, sour cream, fries, gravy… the list goes on and on.
From outside, looking through the front window, the Deli looks like the usual single, long glass counter for take-out only. On the inside, it’s still a single, long glass counter for take-out, but surprise, there’s a large amount of seating space too. The New York-ish feeling is captured on the walls as well as on the menu – pictures of New York City are everywhere, and one wall even features a mural of the Statue of Liberty.
Service is friendly, although a little slow – if you’re on your lunch hour you’ll just barely make it back to work in time – chances are you’ll run about 15 minutes late.
