Matisse is located inside the Mariott on Bloor, between Yonge & Church Sts., and it’s one of the trendier restaurants in the Bloor-Yonge neighbourhood, outside of Yorkville. Decorated with several large-sized paintings by the famous 20th century Fauvist painter, Matisse restaurant is a tribute to the artist, the real Henri Matisse.
To complement his strikingly colourful art, the walls are a cheerful yellow, and the ambience is vibrant and formal at the same time.
The service at Matisse is excellent, and the food is delicious. The restaurant has recently undergone an overhaul, both in its layout and in its menu. The result is less typical fare, and more creativity in both presentation and preparation. The breadbasket that arrives first is the perfect panacea for those nagging hunger pains, and the selection between rolls is just right.
The menu is very simple, with a short but very appealing selection of appetizers and main courses. The influence is eclectic, borrowing from different cultures, for a result that will definitely push you towards overeating… be prepared to indulge yourself. The menu includes items such as Thai chicken salad, a Maple Syrup-drenched rare salmon on a bed of salad, shrimp fettuccine, and butternut squash gnocchi, among other great choices.
The dessert and coffees here are fabulous, so save some room for the sweet stuff. Whether it’s pastry or cake you crave, you can have the best of it. The hot chocolate is rich and smooth, topped with generous amounts of whipped cream and cocoa. The latte’s are addictive, and even a straight cup of coffee is good to the very last drop.
