I was searching for something different than the average gym.  Something challenging and fun, that would get me closer to my goal.  I found Bang Fitness.  When I contacted the owner, Geoff Girvitz, I asked him if I could do a one-on-one session to write about his facility.  I’m sure he chuckled when he wrote back that he wanted me to commit to a full three weeks of training using all that Bang Fitness has to offer.  A single day of training wasn’t going to cut it.  I wasn’t going to back down now, all I could say was “I’m in!"

Bang Fitness is a gym like no other.  I realized this from the very beginning.  My introductory assessment was not like any other one I had done before.  Geoff sat down with me and we spoke about my goals, past injuries, nutrition and lifestyle.  He used the word “gap” to describe something missing from my life.  As in I need to sleep more to heal better after a workout.  Plus, I really needed to eat more protein and Omega 3 in my diet.  These “gaps” were holding me back from reaching my goals.  His job was to get me to commit and get rid of them if I wanted my goal badly enough, and I did.

Part of the physical assessment was to check my strength, balance, flexibility, you name it!  I came out of the assessment feeling seriously pumped and committed to reaching my goal.  Geoff took all this information and came up with a personalized training program for me.  This is not a one size fits all kind of program.  He really considers everyone capable of training under him, whether you are a beginner or a professional athlete.  That’s why it’s so important for him to get you from where you are now to where you want to be in an injury-free way.

During my three weeks of training I learned so much about working out properly.  I’m still amazed at the importance of using the right equipment to do the job.  I’m now in absolute love with foam rollers.  If you don’t know what these are, please give them a try and you will understand what I mean.  They do so much for tight muscles.

I also learned how to activate my muscles before engaging in any weight lifting.  This was all new to me and at first it felt a bit confusing, but once I got the hang of it I was enjoying my workouts more and more.  This is not to say that the workouts were easy.  They were tough.  So tough, one day I wobbled out of the gym and down the stairs while I hung on tightly to the handrail, just in case my legs couldn’t do the job.

I worked out three times a week using the program Geoff created for me.  I worked one-on-one with a personal trainer once a week and independently the other times.  But even those times I always had trained staff around to guide me when I needed the help.  On other days, I lived an active lifestyle of running, walking, yoga, etc.  Now I don’t consider myself an athlete, but I was able to lose 2% body fat and gained 4lbs of muscle during my time at Bang Fitness.  My pants fit me better people!!!  I have to say, Bang Fitness and their staff outdid their promise.  It’s no wonder they were chosen as one of NOW magazine’s top gyms for 2011.
