Too often we fin
d ourselves staring longingly at the plates of other patrons in restaurants, wondering what they’re having, and wishing we’d ordered the same…

As history dictates, it’s a common human affliction, to want what isn’t ours. And it’s also true what’s said about grass being greener on the other side – spinach linguine (it’s really green) tastes really good when it’s in your friend’s plate, more so than when it’s in your own. Such was my plight the other day at Grazie Ristorante, when I found myself wanting to devour my friend’s pasta and yet eat my own pizza at the same time.

It’s a tough choice between the huge single-person pizzas they serve, and the steaming pasta that arrives at your table in the big white porcelain plates. The offering on the menu is standard, pre-designed pizza with the usual choice of olives, tomatoes, onions, ham, etc., or pasta with salmon and vodka, with shrimps and clams, with Bolognese sauce, etc. The choices are split under tomato sauce, creamy tomato sauce (my favourite) and cream sauce. All of the above are delicious, and all are very filling. And although the bread and olive oil is at your table, it might be a good idea to hold out for the main course, especially since the rolls aren’t prizewinners themselves.

The weekly specials are displayed on their website, www.grazie.ca — check it out before you go. Or you can ask one of the waiters… The Grazie staff is everywhere, I’m pretty sure you can’t throw a slice of pizza without hitting a waiter. Their uniform, white shirt and tie with blue jeans, is symbolic of the atmosphere in the restaurant; it’s casual dining, with bottles of vino on every table, and everyone is in the mood to enjoy themselves. And, being an Italian restaurant, they also serve great coffee and desserts.

Grazie doesn’t take reservations, unless it’s for lunch, and there’s always a line-up curving all the way around the bar, at dinnertime. Show up before 6pm and you’ll be fine, but after that, even weeknights are a full house.
