If you judge this place by name or the entrance, it may seem like any other wrap or burrito joint. But after you’re inside and have sampled from the menu, you’ll realize that things couldn’t be further from the truth…
It’s no surprise that seasoned palates occupy the space that is Liberty village. Day or night, its residents and workers demand something with a little more sophistication than your average run of the mill take out joint. Slowly, restaurants and cafes have sprouted to accommodate this taste. I’m not saying that the pubs and diners aren’t busy, just that something a bit more refined always garners excitement and attention. Judging by the amount of people that frequent this tiny shop during lunch on weekdays, there’s definitely some excitement.
A small, vibrant, clean space on Jefferson Ave. There’s a cult-like dedication to healthy and local ingredients. You won’t find cold cuts and boring fillers here, look closer.
Wraps gone gourmet — It begins with a dedication to fresh local ingredients. A variety of greens, nuts and fruit are purveyed from local markets and the Ontario food terminal. Avoiding pre-made, dressings and marinades are made in house. The taste is telling, but can easily be overlooked when all the ingredients are in place.
Meats are carefully tended to, marinated every weekend and double roasted. The roast beef is juicy, the chicken tender, the pork moist. A variety of cheeses is also available (havarti, cheddar, goat cheese, asiago, brie). Even the mayo is low-fat. The options don’t end there. Once you’ve decided how you want to build your wrap, you can also choose the base — everything from Francese rolls to rosemary focaccia, to whole wheat wraps, to olive bread.
Staff are always eager to take you through the ordering process, if you’re not sure what you want to try, ask for their favourites. Choose a meat, the case (sandwich or tortilla if you like paninis), the toppings.
Grilled roast beef with caramelized onions, sauteed red peppers. A pork wrap that knocked me off my feet included slivers of pulled pork, hot peppers, avocado salsa, and havarti cheese. Itz A Wrap is currently only open during lunch hours during the week.
