What's that you say? You're tired of contests? Really? Well, we have an ace up our sleeve that might change your mind.
January marks the return of the incredibly popular Niagara Icewine festival. A celebration of the iconic style of wine, which first gained international credibility when wine maker Karl Kaiser's (Inniskillin) 1989 Icewine won the illustrious Grand Prix d'Honneur at Bordeaux's Vinexpo wine fair in 1991. (Want to learn more about Icewine? Read Mike's Icewine primer.) Quickly thereafter, Niagara-on-the-Lake was pencilled on to the global wine map; Icewine became a delicacy. The upcoming Icewine festival celebrates all things Icewine, with a series of food and drink events in Twenty Valley and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The festival turns 18 this year and kicks off with the Icewine gala, where over 30 wineries pour over 150 wines, matched with extravagant food displays. It's one of the hottest tickets in town and one of the best wine parties in the province. (You can read our coverage of the 2011 festival here.) Another highlight of the festival is the discovery pass program where 30 Wineries will be offering food and wine pairings.
Also, the annual Winterfest in the Square will be held in the town’s Historic Market Square from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm and will feature VQA table and sparkling wines and of course Icewine from across the Niagara Region. Culinary delights will be made available by local restaurants and chefs as well as trendy food trucks. Live entertainment will provide the right mix of casual musical entertainment for all ages.
