What is the single most asked question about Ontario’s various wine regions?
“Where do I go to grab a bite to eat, between all the wine trekking?”

It’s a tough call and the options vary from region to region. Niagara-on-the-lake has many options for breakfast, snack, lunch, dinner. The region can please even the pickiest eater.  Prince Edward County has some options, but not easily accessible. Beamsville? there are some options. Jordan? oh its getting good. There’s the patio at Creekside Estate, charcuterie and bakery at 13th Street, Inn on the Twenty. Here’s a primer about the region’s latest food outlet — El Gastronomo Vagabundo – a food truck serving delicious good food, at Flat Rock Cellars Winery.

Located on a rolling slop a top the Jordan bench with a spectacular view of Toronto, Flat Rock Cellars is a terroir-focused winery committed to sustainable practices whenever possible. The winery ulitizes geo-thermal systems for cooling and heating, has an environmentally conscious waste management system and uses the concept of gravity flow to reduce energy consumption required in the winemaking process.

The bright tasting room leads on to a gorgeous patio with sprawling views of the vineyards. The Toronto skyline appears faintly over the horizon, looking almost like it has been painted on. Driven by the region’s terroir – soil and climate, Flat Rock’s core wines are the Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The El Gastro truck, operated by Adam Hynam-Smith and Tamara Jensen, started operating at the winery in July this year, serving delicious street food with nods to local ingredients whenever possible. The menu is constantly changing.Today’s focus is the marriage between the food and wine at Flat rock.

Riddled Sparkling 2007 ($24.95, through Vintages) – Flat rock’s latest release, a sparkling blended from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, aged in bottle for 22 months after secondary fermentation. Enclosed with a crown cap. The wine has a lot of texture and citrus tones with a welcoming hint of sweetness and berry flavour. Pairs really well with the foie gras torchon Adam and Tamara prepared. Sushi roll with pickled ginger, quebec foie gras, and ponzu caramel.

Pinot Noir 2009 ($19.95) – A plummy fruit forward pinot noir that’s light on the tongue with earthy tones.  Perfect with a small charcuterie plate.

Twisted 2008 ($17.15) – A citrusy blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Chardonnay. On the nose and palate, you can sense the individual flavour characteristics of each varietal. Which makes it difficult to pick out in a blind tasting should you happen to participate in one. The sweetness and acid go hand in hand with a chili caramel pork belly taco, dressed with cucumber and peanut bits.
